Buprenorphine Treatment

A Discussion On the Growth of Buprenorphine Treatments

The buprenorphine treatment method is hard at work throughout the United States detoxing opiate addicts. Buprenorphine is an opioid derivative -- chemically similar to heroin, morphine, methadone, and oxycodone -- but less euphoric and easier to administer and control, at least according to many independent medical surveys. The chemical is comprised of 29 parts carbon to 41 parts hydrogen to one part nitrogen to four parts oxygen, and it yields a biological half-life of approximately a day and a half. In the United States, it’s considered a schedule III drug, and the FDA regulates buprenorphine as a category C substance in terms of its effect on pregnancy.

Buprenorphine is generally administered in one of two formulations, Subutex (which is flavorless and lacks additives) and Suboxone treatment (which generally comes in an orange flavor). Clinicians administer buprenorphine generally every day, although it’s possible to wean off of opiates using a dose every 48 hours. Clinicians dose more frequently to stabilize the levels of the substance in the body and to keep withdrawal and detoxification “smooth.”

Tapering begins almost immediately, and clinicians generally cut off buprenorphine entirely for the last day and a half to two days before treatment ends.

Be aware that buprenorphine creates its own dependency, and although the inclusion of a substance called naxalone may help dissuade abuse and/or misuse of the drug, patients have been known to get hooked on bupe as well. Monitor vitals and look for withdrawal/detox symptoms, such as cold sweats, spasms, diarrhea, and psychological instability.

Great resources for buprenorphine treatment are online and readily available.. A coached buprenorphine rehab combined potentially with methadone detox can minimize the ups and downs of dependence breaking and lead to a safe, often outpatient procedure.
