Making a Loved One Seek Treatment

One of the largest challenges that family and friends of addicts face when trying to address their loved one’s addiction problem is forcing them to seek treatment.

An alcoholic or drug addict cannot be forced to receive professional treatment unless it is ordered by a court or a medial emergency. However, it’s important to remember that its best not to wait for a loved one to hit “rock bottom” until action is taken.

The following suggestions are steps on how to make an addict get help:

Be honest. Family and friends can sometimes make excuses for an alcoholic’s bad behavior. For example, if a family has an alcoholic husband/father and he’d rather drink than go to an outing with other family or friends; the family should be honest when asked why the husband/father is absent. It’ll put pressure on the alcoholic.

Give reasons why the addict should stop. Tell the person why you want them to quit -- bring up specific examples of times that the drinking has caused problems.

Intervene at the right time. The best time to talk to an addict is when they aren’t under the effects of sober and alcohol. This is important. It’s also important to remember to remain calm during the conversation.

Be tough. While being sure not to say anything that you’ll regret, let the addict know the consequences of not seeking help. Let them know that you’re prepared to put limits on your relationship with them in some way if they don’t want to quit their addiction.

Showing an addict the errors of their ways is not an easy thing to do. But, with perseverance and determination, you should prevail and be able to seek professional treatment for your loved one with their willingness.
