How Subutex Treatment Works
Subutex is a commercial formulation of the painkiller opioid known as buprenorphine. Similar to Suboxone in constitution, Subutex is a flavorless dose of opioid -- typically packaged in either 2mg or 8mg milligram capsules. The ubutex treatment contains elements that bind to opioid receptors in the brain -- so-called µ receptors -- to suppress the effects of other opioids. The hydrochloride formulation of Subutex gets broken down by the liver and then further metabolized by the enzymatic action of a compound known as glucuronic acid. All told, Subutex typically stays in the system for approximately 35 hours, although some outlying individuals may maintain traces of buprenorphine in their systems for up to 70-plus hours.
Subutex treatment can begin almost immediately upon patient intake. However, many clinicians prefer to allow current levels of heroin, methadone, morphine, and other opioids to taper off before beginning the subutex tretament. You can consume the drug in pill form, as a patch that administers the drug to the skin, and as an injection. Some patients may even wish to receive buprenorphine through an infusion directly into the bloodstream.
Assuming that there are no adverse patient reactions, detox therapists can slowly “taper off” the daily to bi-daily doses of the drug and thus create a relatively painless platform to end dependency on the addicting opioid.
